Fight, Flight, or Freeze
Becoming a Natural Lawyer, Part 2/3

Fight, Flight, or Freeze
Animals in the wild have three basic survival options:
  • Fight (but only if you think you can win)
  • Flight (but only if you think you can run faster than the other guy)
  • or Freeze (if all else fails).

Fight and flight we pretty much understand. We're good at them. They activate our sympathetic nervous system and spend body resources. If we don't do something to restore them, we end up "out of gas or energy" in life pretty quick.

We don't understand freeze as well. Hint: think "play dead."

In his book, Waking the Tiger: Healing Trauma, Dr. Peter Levine explains how animals in the wild shake off a freeze response and move on with their lives, while humans often don't. Humans may literally "freeze" in the state they occupied at the time of the event that caused their stress reaction ... at least until they can learn a different way to be.

By the way, this is usually unconscious. And, it can come from events so early in life that you didn't have the ability for mature reasoning at the time. In other words, it's possible that some of your "rules" for how life works aren't quite accurate.

[Bonus question: Where in life do you "play dead?"]

Adapt, Migrate, or Perish [Fix it, Get out, or Suffer]
There's another very closely related principle we need to look at. I first heard about it as the rule of "Fix it, Get out, or Suffer."

Here's the rub. Let's say something's off in your life. Big off. Like your job or relationship doesn't work.

You have three and only three options:

  • Fix it (if you have the desire and the energy)
  • Get out of the situation (if you don't have the desire or energy to fix it)
  • or Suffer (which will ultimately lead to ill health).

I was talking about this law with a coaching client one day. It made sense in her situation. Shortly after, she told me she'd heard the same thing from a member of the clergy (remember, they're on our modern-day Shaman team). Only his language, like the language of the Shaman, was grounded in nature.

In the wild, our animal friends have three and only three options when dealing with a challenging environment:

  • Adapt (to the circumstances at hand, in other words, solve the problem)
  • Migrate (leave)
  • or Perish (go figure).

Bottom line: When you've got challenging life circumstances, ignore them at your peril. Because if you continue, you've placed yourself in the big check- out lane of life. Not overnight, necessarily. But slowly, insidiously, they'll leach your energy. And that, in turn, compromises your immune system, compromises your physical body structure, and makes you accident- prone.

Not an opinion. Law. Adapt, Migrate, or Perish. It's just how things work.

People ask me the same questions over and over again:
  • What can I do myself, at home, to improve my health?
  • How did this happen? How did my health degenerate as it has?
  • Why are my muscles so tight???

I created the Wellness Challenge to address those very real questions. For you. Not for me. I spent 15 years answering those questions for myself. Now I'm sharing viable, workable, real-life information and strategies with you in a "do-at-home" program you're sure to appreciate -- if you do it.

Many of you know me and or think of me as a bodyworker. Either you've consulted me yourself, or maybe came across my information on the Internet. Well, it's true. I've been actively involved in the structural bodywork community as a practitioner, researcher, and teacher since 1992.

Yet a full 80% of my post-graduate educational dollar went not for bodywork training, but for training in how a person's life creates the context in which their health arises. Now that doesn't mean I'm undereducated as a bodyworker. It means I'm well- trained in some other areas as well.

Wanna find out how it works? Maybe grab a piece of that 80% for yourself?

Learn about the Wellness Challenge

In our third and final "Natural Lawyer" segment, coming soon, we'll look at a key mechanism that clearly explains how we get from "life" to "health." See it's one thing to "get it" in theory and yet another to understand exactly how the process works.
