Natural Lawyer Part 3 (This Could Be Scary)
October 31, 2005
Dear Elizabeth,
I don't mean to scare you. Honest. But part 3 of 3 in our
Natural Lawyer series may just send shivers up your spine!
By the way, I've been getting a lot of good feedback on the
Natural Lawer series. Thanks! I appreciate hearing from you.
First, let's review
Remember, in this Natural Lawyer series I'm talking about
working with the laws of nature, not of man. For assistance with
stuff like traffic tickets and grand larceny, please consult a
real lawyer!
In Natural Lawyer Part 1 we covered Sir Isaac Newton's
first law of motion. Briefly, it states that "things keep on doing
what they're doing until something gets in the way."
Next, we took a little detour to explore my latest theory
that meteorologists, doctors, and clergy have become the new
shamen. Remember, the traditional shaman's job was to help the
people interpret and engage with nature and its laws.
Then, in Natural Lawyer Part 2 we looked at the
principle of "Fight, Flight, or Freeze" and the closely related
"Adapt, Migrate, or Perish" (also known as "Fix It, Get Out, or
Suffer").
Skeletons and other scary stuff
Remember Wolff's Law of Bone Transformation? This email is
going to a mixed community of people interested in holistic health
and/or body structure concerns. I'm guessing that some of you
already LOVE Wolff's Law as much as I do. And some of you have
never heard of it before. So I'll explain.
Wolff's Law says that body tissue, specifically bone tissue,
transforms to accommodate the force applied to it. It's a type of
adaptation, and it explains one of the ways that the law of
"Adapt, Migrate, or Perish" plays out.
Wolff's Law says that despite the fact that your body's initial
template suggests that your bones develop according to a certain
specified proportional arrangement, you have the ability to change
the template.
You can change the shape and structure of your bones and, in
fact, the fundamental arrangement of your skeletal system.
Remember it is the skeleton that gives you your basic shape.
Wow. Who knew you were that powerful?
But it's true. If your posture is imbalanced for long enough,
if your movement patterns are uneven for long enough, your body
will automatically alter its structure to accommodate you.
You might think this is really cool! After all, it probably
saves a lot of broken bones & other icky- sounding bodily
injuries. So in the short run, it's great!
On the other hand, the original design was a pretty good one
and allows for better resistance to wear and tear on the joints
than most of the alternate options. Just think about how difficult
it might be to change your bones back to the design you
started out with.
Wouldn't it be better to take steps to keep the force of your
body balanced over the original structure plan if you
could? Things would certainly last longer that way!
Even scarier
But wait! There's more! Remember that idea we used to have
about how our DNA carries the "code" our bodies need in order to
develop normally? The idea that DNA is king and we're powerless to
affect or change what we inherit?
Well, that theory is in some doubt. Actually a lot of doubt.
Scientist Dr. Bruce Lipton has some really cool evidence that
implies the DNA isn't in charge at all.
According to Dr. Lipton, the DNA we inherit has a certain range
of potential available. Where within that range we show up depends
upon our perceptions of the environment we're facing.
It's "Adapt, Migrate, or Perish" all over again. If we think
life's gonna be really fun, we produce one thing. If we think this
is a dangerous place, we generate something else. And so on...
What you perceive creates who you are. Not some
objective fly on the wall. Nope. You, with all your built-in
perception biases.
I told you this might be scary!
By the way, if you want to read more about this, check out Dr.
Bruce Lipton's book The Biology of Belief.
Happy Halloween to you and yours!
