What does it mean to treat yourself well?
November 29, 2005
Dear Elizabeth,
We're officially in the thick of the holiday season. Parties,
shopping, lunch buffets, burning the midnight oil. You know. Fun!
Treats! Good times!
When is a treat really a treat?
First of all, I'm a fan of good times. And I'm certainly not trying
to throw a wet blanket on all your holiday plans.
At the same time, let's think for a minute. What does it really
mean to treat yourself well?
Let's say you drink too much at your workplace holiday party and
end up making a fool of yourself in front of your boss. Most of us are
already savvy enough to realize that behavior is not in our best
interests. We make different choices.
Other situations aren't as clear.
Those holiday cookies out by the coffee machine, for example. It
couldn't hurt to try one, could it? Probably not. As long as it's one.
But if you don't normally eat 10 cookies a day, why start now?
Skipping your work-out in favor of some last-minute shopping
probably isn't going to break the bank either. Unless you skip the
entire month of December.
Speaking of shopping, remember those cute little nieces and nephews
you love to spoil? Go ahead and find something nice for them. You'll
feel good. But if it's going to take until April to pay off your
credit card bill, then maybe it would be wise to cut back.
I could go on and on with examples, but I think you've got the idea
by now.
The idea is to stay tuned in to that little voice in the back of
your head. The one that says, "Watch out."
This is the voice of your "Inner Saboteur." And today, it's your
friend. Your Inner Saboteur can sometimes help you keep your integrity
intact, and that can be a very good thing.
Bottom line: Have fun during the holidays. But not so much fun in
the moment that the payback overwhelms you later. Listen in for that
voice of caution. And remember what it means to really treat yourself
well!
